Wichita Wagonmasters Chili Cookoff and Demo – 09/25/21

Attention all Kim’s Academy Students!

KABBA is once again sponsoring Mr. Scott McKinney into this year’s Wichita Wagonmasters Chili Cookoff, being held on Saturday, September 25th, 2021.  Set up, decorating, and cooking prep will begin around 6:00am, with serving of the chili starting at Noon.  This is the 34th year for the event and in years past has drawn between 8,000 and 10,000 people.  Students can help in one of several ways:
  • Work with Mr. McKinney to cook the chili and serve it once the taste testing starts.
  • Help with design, set up and decoration of the booth (and win the Best Booth prize!)
  • Generate excitement for spectators walking by the booth with a cheering section, promoting Kim’s Academy and showing your enthusiasm for Taekwondo (please wear your dobak for this).  If permitted we will also have a “mini-demo” in the section.

Remember, participation in demos and events is part of your progression in rank!  If you can participate please arrive by 10:15am.  Look for the Kim’s Academy flag at the booth on St. Francis, just north of Douglas (the approximate address of the booth location is 111 North St. Francis).  Bring a water bottle, shoes, belt, and wear you dobak.  Click here to for a brochure with more details.

If you have any questions please contact Mr. McKinney by phone or text at  316-641-3010, by email at  kickutkd@gmail.com, or the Facebook event posted at the Kim’s Academy Facebook page.  You can find information on following CDC guidelines here.

Spring Cleaning at the Main School

Needing volunteer hours?  Need some extra funds to help pay for an upcoming taekwondo competition?  Or do you just want to give back to Kim’s Academy?  Then KABBA has a great opportunity for you!  KABBA will be sponsoring Spring Cleaning (early) for Kim’s Academy-Main Branch during February and March.

Below are the dates and times available to help clean the Dojang.  Any participant can earn volunteer hours, up to 4 hours.  Or, for students who are competing in USAT National or State Championships in 2020, scholarship opportunities are available for helping with cleaning, under the organizer’s supervision. Students will receive a $25 voucher, for each hour of cleaning completed, toward tournament fees and expenses, up to $100 (as funds allow, and depending on the number of students who sign up to work).

After the approved State or National competition, students should submit copies of their receipts for tournament expenses, along with their earned vouchers to the KABBA treasurer.  The treasurer will then reimburse the student, up to the amount earned.

Volunteers will report to Meridith Gierhart for cleaning assignments.  She will sign off on volunteer hours and distribute vouchers.  Volunteers under 10 years old must have a parent to help with their cleaning duties.

Allowable expenses for scholarship redemption include:

  • Tournament entry fee
  • Hotel expenses
  • Fuel expenses
  • Airfare
  • Meals while traveling

Sign-up dates and times:

  • Saturday, February 1st: 1:00 – 3:00pm
  • Saturday, February 8th: 1:00 – 3:00 pm
  • Saturday, March 7th: 1:00 – 3:00 pm

You do not have to be requesting volunteer hours or scholarship vouchers to help.  All volunteers are welcome!

Wichita Wagonmasters Chili Cookoff – 09/22/18

Kim’s Academy will once again be participating in the Wichita Wagonmasters Chili Cookoff, scheduled for September 22, 2018.  Last year Kim’s placed 3rd out of 90 teams that competed in the Spirit and Booth decorations category.  This year we would like to be First Place!  We are working on a Demo schedule and should have more details soon as well as location of the booth – please check back for updates.

At least 10 to 12 volunteers are needed to help with set up and cooking prep, which will begin at 8am.  If you sign up in advance you will receive a Kim’s Academy T-Shirt generously donated by KABBA.  Breakfast will also be offered to those who help (donuts, bagels, orange marmalade, eggs, and sausage).  If you are a coffee drinker please bring your own.

If you have any questions or can volunteer please text me at 316-641-3010.

Thanks,
Scott McKinney
