Self-Defense Class – How to Teach

Attention Kim’s Academy Black Belts!

Sr. Master Diana Hilburn is organizing a “train the trainer” class to promote the teaching of self-defense.

When:  Saturday, March 30th, 2019 from 1:00 – 4:00pm
Location:  Kim’s Academy Main School, located at 1617 S. Longfellow in Wichita, KS
Instructors: Grand Master Kim and a guest instructor

This event is open to all Kim’s Academy Black Belt students and any Red/Black tips that recently pre-tested for Danbo.  Grand Master Kim will begin the training and then turn it over to Bruce Morton.  Bruce has taught Self Defense to the Wichita Police academy and the State academy for over 30 years.  He is the only instructor in Wichita authorized to teach women at the Rape Crisis center.  Whether you have never taught self-defense, or teach it on a frequent basis, you are encouraged to attend.  KABBA has self-defense as a key initiative to help grow the school.  We need more instructors capable of teaching self defense classes.  We will also having a drawing to give away three Self Defense books at the end of class.  Each participate will be given a “free” raffle ticket to be eligible for the drawing.  There is no cost for this class or the raffle ticket.  You must be present at the end of the class to be eligible to win one of the books.    The three book titles are “Gift of Fear” by Gavin De Becker, “Left of Bang” by Patrick Van Horne and Jason Riley, and “When Violence is the Answer” by Tim Larkin.  Mr. Morton strongly recommends all three to anyone planning or currently teaching self defense courses.

This is a great opportunity to learn from someone that has been recognized across the state for his Self Defense training!  If you have any questions please email kabba.board@gmail.com.

Website Redesign!

After several months of work, we are proud to introduce a redesign of the Kim’s Academy website!  Improvements include:

  • Completely replacing the old website (which was static HTML-based) with a solution that uses WordPress as the underlying foundation.  For those non-technical, this is Good Thing and should allow us to make future updates with less effort in the future.
  • Utilizing a Responsive template.  This means the website will automatically adjust the content you see to fit the laptop, tablet, or smartphone device you are viewing it on.
  • Improvements to each Kim’s Academy location page
    • A Google Map view.
    • Clearer presentation of schedules.
  • An experimental “Schedule Finder” feature.  With this feature you can look at a summary view of schedules from all Kim’s Academy locations and filter on specific class types, days, times, or locations.  For example, let’s say you’re interested in attending a Kim’s Academy class but only have Tuesday’s and Thursday’s opened.  With the Schedule Finder you can filter on these two days and see what class locations and times fit your request!
  • News and Announcements posted to the website will provide Google Map views and event information you can add to your calendars with one simple click.
  • A Search feature (look for the magnifying glass icon to the right of the main menu bar), allowing you to quickly find content on the website.
  • An easier way for us to add social links to popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and SnapChat.  Kim’s Academy Instructors – if you have any social links you’d like to add to your location please let us know!

There are still a few minor “fit and finish” items to complete, but overall we think you’ll enjoy the experience!  If you have any feedback or comments, feel free to send them to webmaster@kimsacademy.com.

Kamsahamnida,

Senior Master Robert Stankey, 6th Dan
